Shareware download app – some numbers

Hi, I recently released a shareware app and I thought I'd share my experiences so far, since I didn't see too many pages that gave concrete numbers for something similar.

The app is Pandali Folder Master, and it's an add-in for Microsoft Outlook to make it easier to move multiple folders.  It's a 30-day-free-trial download and after 30 days a registration screen will appear and most of the app becomes disabled.  (For an interesting discussion of crippling vs not, you might want to check out http://hackvan.com/pub/stig/articles/why-do-people-register-shareware.html – the most interesting thing for me is the guy claims to have made $34K in a year for about two days of work)!

The app was first released mid-July 2010.  While there haven't been a huge number of downloads, I think it's enough to start seeing some interesting trends.

1) Slow start to registrations – The first interesting point is that there were no registrations at all for the first three months.  Obviously for the first month, everyone was within the 30-day free trial period, so that wasn't too surprising.  But for the next couple months there were still no registrations at all, and in fact almost nobody was seeing the registration screen.  I was getting depressed.

2) Gradual pickup – The first registrations started coming in mid-October.  Around then it was looking like the ratio of registrations to downloads might be about 1 in 200, which was a little discouraging.  But then in November registrations started picking up some more, and now the ratio seems like it is more like 1 in 50, possibly even better.

My theory is that this is the sort of app that people might use once every few months but not every day.  And so it took a while for the first downloaders to use the app again.  Downloads have increased over time, but not as dramatically as the increase in registrations in November.  Downloads currently may be about 2x what they were intially.

Another interesting item is with Google AdWords.  I experimented with Google AdWords and Microsoft's adCenter.  I'm still an adwords novice, but after a couple of weeks experimentation and maybe a hundred clicks or so, incredibly I could not track a single download to AdWords or the bing equivalent.  That doesn't mean there weren't any as not everybody's referrer was set, but still very surprising, especially compared with the ratio of downloads / click via some random forum posts I made.  A significant number of these clicks came from the Google "Display Network" (sites using AdSense and other non-search sites) before I turned that off – part of me is suspicious if there is some heavy click-frauding going on with the Display Network sites.

Anyway, the app has brought in nowhere near the $34K that the other guy made with his two days of work, but we'll see what the future holds.  These experiences are of course particular to this particular product and so you may achieve very different results with a different product.  If you've released a shareware app or a mobile app, or even a freemium website, I'd love to hear your experiences.  Thanks!

Thanks for sharing! I'm interested that you didn't see any traffic from adwords/bing equivalent. Did you work on optimizing those channels?

You mentioned that people weren't seeing the registration screen – do you have a way to track that in your software, or did people stop using it before the 30 day trial ended?

Some other thoughts I have heard about for better shareware sales

  • perhaps decrease trial to 15 days
  • optimize the sales path from shareware->buy. Some shareware is annoying, but they make it hard to figure out how to purchase.

Do you have a link to your software site? There may be other tips I can offer around optimizing your site appearance.

I didn't spend too much time on adwords / bing ads.  I did get a decent number of clicks when I turned on the Google Display Network option, but none of those clicks translated into downloads, at least as far as I could track.

Yes, I do have tracking when the registration reminder pops up.  But it will only check for free-trial-expiration if the person is using my product, not just Outlook.  So my theory is that a lot of people used it once then didn't return to the product for a few months.  The recent increase in registrations seems to support that.

The site is http://pandali.com/pfm.html.  Yes, it's really old and definitely needs some work, I know!  I have an item on my list to do that.  I created the site about 10 years ago and haven't gotten a chance to update it significantly yet.

Thanks for the input!

Nice, I think it looks pretty easy to use! Do you know how many people need to do this task on a regular basis? I think it is probably very useful a set number of times (for instance, I want to replicate my folder structure to my 2 laptops today), but then isn't needed for a potentially long time. Perhaps you have chosen the wrong demo type?

You might find more people buy if you limit the free trial to something like moving 10 folders, and charging after that. This way, people can still see that it works, but only light outlook users would be able to get everything they need for free.

Hope this helps, and good luck!!

Yup, good points.  It might be worthwhile doing an experiment with limiting the # of folders, or some other free trial mechanism and seeing how that affects the numbers.  Thanks!

Quick update – so after healthy registration activity in November, there was suddenly a three-week period of no registrations at all.  I was starting to get worried if the system was working (and it just so happened when I checked regnow.com the other day it was down – I think that was temporary though).  Then just recently a few more registrations popped in.

I found this website http://studioeres.com/games/content/history-conversion-rate-immortal-defense talking about the conversion rates for the Immortal Defense game.  They also saw quite a bit of variation, with the conversion rates ranging from 0.3% to 3%.  I think one thing to take away is not to get too caught up in the random fluctuations of the numbers.
